If I have
to choose one album that I consider relatable, beautiful and extremely
interesting for the history behind and itself I will choose one called ‘’For Emma, Forever Ago’’ by the
indie folk band called Bon Iver. I want to make clear that I said band, but really, is just Justin Vernon (the
vocalist) who create the whole thing, and the other people just play with him
in the shows, as a ‘’band’’.
In 2006, Justin Vernon
moved to a remote cottage of his father in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin
when the winter starts. After the breakup of his long time band and also with
his girlfriend, he got sick of mononucleosis, he wanted to escape from
every human being and surrounded himself with quiet and space. He lived
there alone for three months.
In that time of
isolation he discover a new voice, literally, he starts to sing in falsetto,
and he began to improvise with his guitar to finally record the whole album by
himself.
This album make
me feel so many things and it came to my life when I was 14 years and I still
listen to it. Makes me feel calm, like freezing, like if I can smell the trees
and the snow.
* Related to the
meaning of Bon Iver, it is a French term that means ‘’buen invierno’’ in spanish. Taken
from a serie that Justin Vernon saw in that cottage called ‘’Dr. Alaska’’.
"Emma is not a person; Emma is a place that you get stuck in; Emma is a pain that you cannot erase''
